We’re almost at the halfway point of 2026 and whilst it may have been a consideration to many in the New Year as you can see below from stats taken from the National Wills Report 2025 it shows that there is still a gap between thinking about it and actually getting round to setting a Will up!

• Only 37% of adults have a Will.
• 63% of adults remain without one.
• 29% of people with a Will haven’t told anyone where it is stored.
• 51% of adults do not know where their parent’s Will is kept.

This last 2 statistics also show that even if a Will exists, it may be difficult or almost impossible to find it when its needed and this can cause unnecessary stress for families during an already a difficult time.

Practical Steps to Take in 2026

To protect your loved ones and assets, consider the following actions:

1. Make a Will
If you do not already have one, making a Will should be a priority, especially if you have young children, own property, or live with an unmarried partner.

2. Review Your Existing Will
Check that it still reflects your current situation regarding your family set up, assets your wishes and that it meets current legal requirements.

3. Ensure Your Will Can Be Found
Make sure you tell your executors where your Will is being stored and also consider registering its location with the National Will Register.

4. Lifetime Planning beyond Wills
A Will should form part of a broader evaluation, working alongside things such as Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) to protect you during your lifetime as well as a Will after death.
