Why do I need a Will and an LPA?
Contrary to beliefs, “My next of kin will have the final say”, or “I’ll make an LPA when the time comes” the reality is that everyone needs an LPA, regardless of age or current mental health status and to wait until you need one is usually too late. A former Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice in 2007, when LPAs were first introduced said, “We all know how important it is to plan for the future. Having a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place should be as common and natural as making a Will”. Less than 1% of the adult UK population has an LPA. However, 1 in 3 persons on average over the age of 65 in the UK develop dementia (Alzheimer’s Society), and every 90 seconds someone in the UK, is admitted to hospital with an acquired brain injury (Headway).
Having a professional help you write a Will and LPA means that everything is factored in, when the time comes. A Will can protect your family home, financial savings to everyday possessions and special heirlooms, make sure that all of your assets are properly allocated to the right people when you die. An LPA will ensuring decisions about you during your lifetime are made by the people you trust and not Social Services. This doesn't’ just give you peace of mind, it also ensures a smoother process for you and your loved ones.
